M4500 IO Boards

The M4500 PLC supports addressing of up to 12 I/O slots. Geographical addressing is not used. The slot addresses are specified by dip switches on the I/O board. The PLC section is capable of addressing up to 64 bytes at each slot. Memory mapped I/O is incorporated to provide the greatest degree of flexibility in accessing the I/O boards.


Digital I/O Boards

Digital I/O boards are installed as required in the M4500 chassis for connection to operator controls and machine electrical devices. These boards can be installed in any vacant slot in the M4500 chassis and are slot addressed by a dip switch on the board. The following digital I/O boards are currently available:

The S4580 analog I/O board provides extended features and capabilities beyond the built-in analog of the M4500. This board can be installed in any vacant slot in the M4500 chassis and slot addressed by a dip switch on the board.

Communications Boards

The communications boards are used to provide point-to-point communications to other devices (PLCs, operator interfaces, etc) or to network multiple M4500 modules together. In point-to-point applications, either RS-232 or RS-422 can be used along with a number of third party protocols (Allen-Bradley DF1, Modicon Modbus, Siemens TI, etc).

In networked applications, up to 32 M4500 (or SEG S3000 or M4000) modules can be networked together using the S3000C network to pass information between nodes. This network is generally configured as a hierarchic network with one master and the remainder slaves but can also be configured for a peer-to-peer network as well.

These boards can be installed in any vacant slot in the M4500 chassis and are slot addressed by a dip switch on the board. The following communications boards are currently available:

  • One S3000 serial network port (configurable for 106KBPS, 228KBPS, or 344KBPS)
  • One RS-232/RS422 user port (configurable for 9600 or 19.2K baud)
  • RS-232/RS-422 port can be used for general purpose point-to-point half-duplex or full-duplex communications as well as implementing specific protocols such as MODBUS (with appropriate software drivers)

Communications CO-CPU board for use with Siemens/TI 545:

  • Communications CO-CPU Board with S3000 Serial Network Interface and RS-232/RS-422 USER PORT.

Motion Control Boards

The M4500 product line supports motion control via the M4510 or M4512 PLC/PLS/Motion Control module and the S4520-RDC and S4520-ENC. The S4520-RDC/ENC are motion control Co-CPUs with motion control I/O integrated directly into the board. These are programmed with SYSdev just as any M4500 modules are.

Multiple axis control is provided where the resolver of the M4510 acts as the master axis and the S4520-RDC/ENC would represent a slave axis. The M4510 resolver position is passed directly to the S4520-RDC/ENC Co-CPUs in the form of a 12-bit (0-4095) angular position. The S4520-RDC/ENC than interact directly with a slave axis servo amplifier and feedback transducer, typically implementing a PID closed loop algorithm to control the axis. Up to eight slave axis can be implemented with each axis controlled independently by it's own S4520-RDC/ENC.

The S4520-RDC is used when a resolver is used as the servo feedback transducer while the S4520-ENC is used when an encoder is used as the feedback. The following motion boards are available:
